Walking the Greenway

GReenway Invasives Partnership—What is it?

Welcome to the
Little Tennessee River Greenway

The Little Tennessee River Greenway is one of more than a thousand such trails snaking their way across America turning old canals, abandoned railbeds and forgotten riverbanks into green recreational corridors.

The Greenway represents a voluntary local strategy to preserve scenic, natural, historic, cultural and recreational resources and promotes increased public access to the Little Tennessee River through the creation of riverside parks and trails.

Please take the time to stroll through our site and discover what the Greenway has to offer, how you can participate, and other information on this beautiful area of western North Carolina.

The Water feature at Big Bear Park runs from 10 AM to 7 PM daily from Mid April to mid October. It shuts off when it's not in use after a limited time. Restarting the sprays may be accomplished by pressing the top of the yellow post and waiting about 2 minutes.

Parents are asked to supervise their children as to their abilities and the limitations of the play equipment. Children over 100 pounds should not mount the spring frogs and the small swings as they are designed for small children. As these items are quite expensive to replace we ask that all adults watch for misuse of the playground equipment and help us to maintain a safe playground. Do not let children pick at the playground surface. It is composed of a rubber topping with a glue base and is there to cushion their falls. Repairs may require the shutting down of the playground for 2 days to allow the glue to cure. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Tassee play area has pea gravel around the play units to soften falls. When children remove the gravel, it increases the danger of injury. Loose gravel on the walkways makes it difficult for handicapped persons in wheelchairs to roll up into the shelter. Please be considerate of others.

Shelter Reservations

A new FEE SCHEDULE for the use of the Greenway shelters will begin on July first. Groups of 10 to 50 wishing to reserve should contact the Frog Quarters to see if their choice of dates is available, then go there to fill out a form with details and pay the non-refundable $20 fee. Larger groups of over 50 will be charged $40 . These fees are now necessary due to rising costs of maintaining the Greenway.

Call the Friends of the Greenway office on 357 E. Main St. at 828-369-8488 to start the process.

Macon County public schools do not need to pay any fee, but reservations are necessary. All other schools, local and out of county are expected to comply with the new fee schedule
